Motor Insurance

Meaning of Motor Insurance

Motor insurance is a contract between a vehicle owner and an insurance company. The insurance company agrees to provide financial protection against losses or damages to the vehicle or liabilities to third parties arising from accidents, theft, fire, or other specified risks, in exchange for a premium paid by the vehicle owner.

Types of Motor Insurance Policies

The following are common types of motor insurance policies:

  • Third Party Policy: This is the most basic and compulsory form of motor insurance in Nigeria. It covers damage or injury caused by the insured vehicle to a third party’s property or person. It does not cover damage to the insured vehicle itself or injury to the driver.
  • Third Party Fire and Theft Policy: This policy provides the cover of a Third Party policy, and additionally covers loss or damage to the insured vehicle due to fire or theft. It still does not cover other damages to the insured vehicle from an accident.
  • Comprehensive Policy: This is the broadest form of motor insurance cover. It includes all the benefits of Third Party Fire and Theft, and also covers damages to the insured vehicle itself resulting from accidents, vandalism, natural disasters, and other specified perils. It offers the most extensive protection for the vehicle owner.
