Lesson Content/Board Summary

CONSTRUCTION OF GOWN

Fabric Preparation and Graining

Proper fabric preparation is the first step towards a well-made garment. It ensures the fabric is stable and ready for cutting.

  1. Checking for Flaws: Inspect the fabric for any defects such as holes, snags, or uneven prints.
  2. Preshrinking: If the fabric is likely to shrink, it should be washed or steamed before cutting to prevent shrinkage after the garment is made.
  3. Straightening the Grainline (Trueing the Fabric):
    1. Pull a crosswise thread from selvage to selvage to create a straight edge.
    2. Align the fabric along this straight edge by pulling diagonally until the crosswise and lengthwise grains are at right angles.
    3. Press the fabric to set the straightened grain.

Folding and Laying of Patterns

Accurate pattern layout is critical for achieving the correct garment shape and drape.

  1. Understanding Grainlines:
    1. Lengthwise Grain: Runs parallel to the selvage, providing strength and stability.
    2. Crosswise Grain: Runs perpendicular to the selvage, with some stretch.
    3. Bias Grain: Runs diagonally across the fabric, offering maximum stretch and drape.
  2. Folding the Fabric: Fold the fabric according to the pattern guide, usually lengthwise or crosswise, ensuring the fold is on grain.
  3. Placing Pattern Pieces:
    1. Lay pattern pieces on the fabric, ensuring all grainline arrows on the pattern align precisely with the fabric’s grain.
    2. Consider “with nap” or “without nap” layouts for directional fabrics to ensure all pieces run in the same direction.
    3. Arrange pieces economically to minimize fabric waste.
  4. Pinning Pattern Pieces: Pin the pattern pieces securely to the fabric, placing pins perpendicular to the cutting line and within the seam allowance.

Cutting Out Fabric

Precise cutting ensures that garment pieces fit together correctly.

  1. Using Dressmaking Shears: Use sharp dressmaking shears, keeping the lower blade on the table to avoid lifting the fabric.
  2. Smooth, Even Cuts: Cut along the cutting lines with long, smooth strokes.
  3. Cutting Notches: Snip notches outwards or inwards as indicated on the pattern, ensuring they are clear but do not extend into the seam allowance.
  4. Transferring Markings: Transfer all pattern markings (e.g., darts, pleats, buttonholes, pocket placements) to the fabric using tailor’s chalk, tracing wheel, or tailor’s tacks.

Joining with Loose Stitches (Circular Method)

Loose stitches are temporary stitches used for fitting, easing, or temporarily holding fabric layers together before permanent machine stitching.

  1. Purpose: Used for basting, holding curved seams, easing fullness, or marking construction lines that require flexibility.
  2. Circular Method: This involves making loose, temporary stitches in a circular or semi-circular pattern, often used for easing curved edges (like a sleeve cap into an armhole) or for creating soft gathers.
    1. Use a single thread and a hand sewing needle.
    2. Make long, even stitches, leaving them loose enough to allow for adjustment and easing.
    3. Do not knot the thread tightly at the beginning or end, allowing for easy removal after permanent stitching or fitting.
    4. The stitches follow the curve of the seam or area requiring ease.
  3. Application: Often used to temporarily join bodice to skirt, set in sleeves, or join curved seams for a fitting session.

  1. On a piece of scrap fabric (at least 1m x 1m), practice straightening the grainline and pressing it flat.
  2. Using a simple pattern piece (e.g., a skirt front), lay it out on your prepared fabric, ensuring the grainline is correctly aligned, and pin it securely.
  3. Cut out the pattern piece accurately, including any notches.
  4. On a separate curved fabric edge, practice joining with loose stitches using the circular method.
  5. Bring your prepared fabric, cut piece, and stitched sample to the next class for review.

Lesson Keywords

  • Fabric Preparation – The process of getting fabric ready for cutting and sewing, including preshrinking and straightening the grain.
  • Graining – Aligning the fabric threads (lengthwise and crosswise) at right angles to ensure proper drape and fit.
  • Pattern Layout – The arrangement of pattern pieces on fabric according to grainlines and fabric folds.
  • Cutting Out – The process of accurately cutting fabric pieces from the pattern using shears.
  • Loose Stitches – Temporary stitches, often used for basting, fitting, or easing, that are easily removed.
