Film processing involves a series of chemical baths that transform the invisible latent image on an exposed film into a visible and permanent image. These chemicals react with the light-sensitive silver halide crystals in the film emulsion.

Developers

The developer is the first chemical used in film processing. It converts the exposed silver halide crystals into black metallic silver, making the latent image visible.

Components of a typical developer solution include:

  1. Developing agents: Such as hydroquinone and metol, which reduce exposed silver halides.
  2. Accelerator: An alkaline compound (e.g., sodium carbonate) that activates the developing agents.
  3. Restrainer: (e.g., potassium bromide) that prevents the development of unexposed silver halides, reducing fog.
  4. Preservative: (e.g., sodium sulfite) that prevents the developer from oxidising too quickly.

Stop Bath

After development, the film is transferred to a stop bath. This is an acidic solution, usually diluted acetic acid, which neutralizes the alkaline developer and immediately halts the development process. This prevents overdevelopment and ensures consistent results.

Fixation (Fixer)

The fixer is the final chemical bath. It removes any remaining unexposed silver halide crystals from the film emulsion, making the image permanent and insensitive to further light exposure. The fixer also hardens the emulsion, protecting the image from damage.

The main active ingredient in a fixer is sodium thiosulfate (hypo).

Effects of Unwanted Light (Fogging)

Fogging occurs when the film is exposed to unwanted light during processing before fixation is complete. This causes a uniform grey veil or overall darkening across the entire film, reducing image contrast and clarity. Proper darkroom procedures and safe lighting are essential to prevent fogging.
