Mode of Action of Detergents
Detergents clean by a process similar to soaps, but are generally more effective, especially in hard water. Their cleansing action involves:
- Wetting: Detergents are excellent wetting agents. They reduce the surface tension of water, allowing it to spread more easily and penetrate fabrics or surfaces.
- Emulsification: Detergent molecules have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (oil-loving) tail. The hydrophobic tails surround oil and grease particles, while the hydrophilic heads face outwards into the water. This forms tiny droplets called micelles.

- Rinsing: The suspended dirt particles are then easily rinsed away with water.

- Environmental Impact:
- Soap: Biodegradable and generally less harmful to the environment.
